For years, Americans were told the ivermectin debate was over.
RFK Jr. says we should be asking why. Kennedy has accused powerful public-health and pharmaceutical interests of pushing ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine aside during COVID — not simply because of questions about the medications themselves, but because acknowledging effective alternatives could have threatened the vaccine rollout.
In other words: Kennedy says there was far more at stake than a disagreement over two medications.
It’s a sweeping allegation, and one that remains heavily disputed. But after years of “horse pill” headlines and bitter fights over COVID treatment, his comments are dragging the controversy right back into the spotlight. And they raise a fact worth remembering: Ivermectin wasn’t invented during COVID. It wasn’t created for COVID. And its history in human medicine didn’t begin with COVID. It goes back decades.
Researchers discovered avermectins, a breakthrough that helped earn the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. From that research came ivermectin, which became an important treatment for several parasitic infections and has served patients around the world for decades.
That history matters. Because before ivermectin became a political lightning rod, it was already a medication with a long-established role in human medicine.
“We could have gotten through the pandemic and saved huge numbers of lives if we would have had those discussions,” McCullough said.
Stinchfield then asked how many lives might have been saved if ivermectin had been seriously considered instead of being dismissed with “horse pill” rhetoric. McCullough’s answer was short:
“Oh, it would have been huge.”
Years later, Kennedy is helping put that question back on the table. Was ivermectin given a fair hearing — or did politics, money, and the vaccine debate make an honest medical discussion impossible?
