What Does GSR Mean?
GSR stands for “galvanic skin resistance,” sometimes called galvanic skin response. The electrical resistance of the skin, measured between two fingertips or other convenient points on the body, has been used by psychologists as an indication of nervous system activity for over 65 years. The first instruments for this purpose used an early form of electric meter called a galvanometer, after the Italian scientist Luigi Galvani. Hence, the instrument became known as a “psychogalvanometer,” and the change in skin resistance was simply called “GSR.”
Biofeedback instruments comprise a useful part of this work, an application of modern technology to the exploration and development of man’s understanding and control of his own internal energies. With such instruments, we amplify our awareness of these internal states, thereby enabling us to control them when we need or desire.
